What a thrill it was to read Jancis Robinson MW's review of the Tiger Tiger Chardonnay over the weekend.
In a feature on wines from the Tumbarumba wine region - just south of Canberra - she said, "I was hugely impressed by some of the wines, especially the Chardonnays." And although we produce the wines we love, regardless of scores, we were delighted that both the 2016 and 2017 vintages were awarded a score of 17, recognising a 'superior' wine.
Of the 2017, Jancis writes: "Almost colourless. Lightly reductive, very zesty nose. Mmm. Really fills the palate with ripe, friendly fruit but has the drive and zest to keep it all racy. There has been a little evolution already. Quite long."
And of the 2016: "Almost colourless. More obviously struck match than the 2017. Chiselled fruit with, again, very fine, ripe fruit on the mid palate. Very mineral and pleasing. Youthful for a four-year-old wine. But not quite as much focus as the 2017."
Jancis tasted the wines as part of a feature on the pristine Tumbarumba wine region, just a few hours south of Canberra. Tumbarumba is the region we source grapes from for our Tiger Tiger Chardonnay, the Ledger Grüner Veltliner, and the Landfall Pinot Meunier, and is also home to some exceptional vineyards and wineries.
Tumbarumba has had a tough start to the year, following the January 2020 bushfires, smoke taint, and the closure of cellar doors due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and we are thrilled for our colleagues and friends in this region that she has ranked the wines from this region as amongst the world's best.
